May 1999 - Amsterdam, London, Bath & Stonehenge
The year before I went on a group tour of several counties in Europe. While I loved seeing the sites, the group dynamics and constant movement were not a good fit for me. So in 1999 I choose a couple city that had intrigued me the year before and revisited them on my own.
Amsterdam
Train from the airport to the city. At the time riding a train in a Europe by myself seemed like an adventure.
Stayed at this hole in the wall hotel on Damrak. It was pretty horrible - you live and you learn.
It is the only time I have been in Amsterdam during tulip session.
Garden in the Begijnhof..
Typical canal scene.
Kalverstraat which is a main shopping street.
One of the more impressive historic canal houses.
View of Amsterdam from the harbor.
London
Saint Paul's Cathedral .
View from atop the dome of Saint Paul's.
British Museum - I spent half a day here and only saw a small portion. I hope to see more of it some day.
Buckingham Palace.
Parliament with Victoria Tower.
Street scene in Kensington
Kensington Palace
Trafalger Square
View of the Tower of London from atop Tower Bridge
Thames river from atop Tower Bridge
Westminster Abby
Imperial War Museum
Interior of the Imperial War Museum
Hampton Court
I took the train outside London to Hampton Court
View from the rail station.
One of the inner courtyards.
Part of the later addition
The gardens.
The Thames at Hampton Court.
Bath
Took a day group tour of Bath and Stonehenge
Bath Cathedral.
Park in the city.
Roman baths
Stonehenge
Stonehenge was a bit disappointed for me. Again I probably had unrealistic expectations and honestly prehistory is not that interesting to me.
